In Gardens Where We Feel Secure with Debbie George – 4th-6th September
September 4 @ 8:00 am - September 6 @ 5:00 pm£385
About this course
Debbie George’s work is a celebration of her passion for flowers and the objects with which she surrounds herself – from ceramics to fruits, feathers and stones.
Frequently Debbie assembles flowers or objects within the foreground of a painting and sets them against a far landscape, so that you sense a domestic space opening out into nature: both spaces are revealed with surprising clarity and with a perspective that is uniquely the artist’s own. The carefully selected objects – some found or given, others acquired especially for painting – are equally carefully positioned, to the extent that the space between them, or emptiness around them, is highly resonant.
On this course, you’ll gain a unique insight into Debbie’s work, and create your own artwork in her inimitable style.
What will happen during the class?
This three day course begins with a tour of the Cut Flower Garden at Schumacher College (an on-site institution dedicated to delivering transformative learning through principles of sustainable living) and our beautiful Walled Garden, where you’ll select you favourite blooms for this fabulous painting course. We will be working in Studio 20 and also in a beautiful summer house location on the Dartington estate.
The workshop will start with you arranging some flowers into your favourite mug or jug to create your still life. Debbie will then guide you through the process – no experience is needed and flowers, tools and materials will be provided.
Working with the ancient medium of gesso, with which she primes her panels, Debbie will teach you her technique of building up layer upon layer of paint to create a wonderful luminosity and depth. She then scratches into and through the layers to emphasise form. By doing so she expresses subtle tonal and sculptural qualities.
You will take home your painting and your bunch of flowers.
About the artist – Debbie George
Debbie George’s work is inspired by the rugged landscape that surrounds her home in Holmfirth, West Yorkshire, where she has lived for the past twenty years. Debbie incorporates this wild scenery, simple vessels, flowers and vintage ceramics into her beautiful, delicate, nostalgic paintings.
Debbie graduated in 1991 from Breton Hall College with a degree in Fine Art. Her work is highly collectable and she sells her paintings in galleries across the country.
